U.S. bourse was closed three hours early on Wednesday on the eve of the Independence Day holiday. Trading volume was muted, but the three major stock indexes held steady, with the Nasdaq and the S&P 500 logging new highs.

The Nasdaq closed at 18,188.3, up 159 pts or 0.9%. The S&P 500 set an intraday high of 5,539 and closed at 5,537, up 28 pts, or 0.5%. The DJIA closed down 23 pts, or 0.06%, at 39,308.
